New Motocross Bercy Supercross Night One Race Report

by Ray Archer

The 28th annual Bercy supercross is taking place this weekend in Paris, France at the Omi Palacesports (which is French for “We grow green grass on the walls” or something like that) and the history and prestige of this race is not to be fooled with.

Pretty much every legend of the sport has touched their knobbies to the French clay and the track truly is more of an arenacross track with some fast tunnels thrown in for good measure

Add caption
French racers like 2010 MX2 Champion Marvin Musquin, Greg Aranda and Gauthier Paulin were obviously the crowd favorite but the European riders also had the MX1 champion Antonio Cairoli there as well as GP winner Ken De Dycker and CLS Kawasaki rider Max Anstie. It was a stacked field that the “American” riders faced. Going over there to represent the AMA circuit were GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia who was coming off his first career 450 pro race last weekend in Genoa, BTOSports.com/BBMX’s Michael Byrne, former World and National champion Grant Langston, Barcia’s teammate Blake Wharton, Rockstar Suzuki’s Ryan Morais and Motoconcepts Yamaha’s Kyle Chisholm.

There would be three different races to feature all the best riders. First up was a best lap time in a single lap-take it contest. The riders were staged from the slowest qualifier to the fastest and Justin Barcia managed to hold onto the lead until the very last rider and fastest qualifier, Frenchman Gauthier Paulin, snatched it away from him.

The kid nicknamed ‘Bam-Bam’ wouldn’t be stopped as he took the holeshot in the final race and sped off for the win to make it two out of three in the elimination race. Barcia, Musquin and Paulin were setting themselves up to be the guys to beat entering into the final 15-lap main event. All points from all the events are collected and count towards being named the “King of Bercy” at the conclusion of Sunday’s main event.

Chaos ensued early in the main event when Greg Aranda did a different rhythm than Langston early in the main causing a spectacular crash where Aranda’s bike ended up flipping upside down and into the other lane. None of that mattered to Barcia as he grabbed the start and quickly put four seconds on Musquin. The top two pulled away from everyone else and put on a show with Barcia being the only rider to consistently do the triple/triple.

Kyle Chisholm is showing that his upward trend of 2010 is continuing as he made a sweet pass on Christophe Martin and Cedric Soubeyras (who was riding a KTM 250 two-stroke) in on turn vaulting himself from fifth to third in one smooth move.

From there the rest of the racers battled the now rutty and rough track and some not so successfully. England’s Max Anstie flew off the track at the end of one of the tunnel sections, Wharton got some headshake and went down in a heap and everywhere you looked riders were crashing out. All told, over half of the top ten qualifiers didn’t finish the main event!

So after night one, it looks like Justin Barcia is the man to beat here in Bercy but after what we saw tonight, who knows what is going to go on the next two nights!

San Manuel Yamaha’s James Stewart is back in action after a lengthy recovery from the broken wrist he suffered earlier in the year. We caught up with Stewart at Pala Raceway today, where he was testing in preparation for his return to racing at the Unadilla National in a couple weeks.  Though Bubba was only turning in a couple of laps at a time in between suspension and engine changes, it was apparent that the time off didn’t hurt his speed at all.

Welcome to Monday Kickstart, presented by our friends at One Industries. It’s been a nice, long and relaxing weekend for the TransWorld Motocross crew, as we all got to spend Christmas among our families and friends. It certainly seems like time flies when you’re having fun, and it’s a known fact that we have a lot of fun putting together the world’s best-selling motocross magazine. It seems like just the other day that we were handing out candy to trick or treaters, and now, Christmas is a fading memory and Anaheim 1 is a mere two weeks away!

Swap sent out a text message to some of the contacts on his phone, asking, “What was the best present that you gave or got this year?” Here are some of the responses we got…

k4

“I bought a new mountain bike for my girlfriend, so that we can go riding together. We can stay in shape and ride the dogs around at the same time!” - Todd Potter, X Games Gold Medalist

“My favorite gift that I gave this year was a wine refrigerator for my mom. The best gift I got was from my girlfriend: she gave me Anaheim Ducks tickets.” - Travis Baker, Lucas Oils/Troy Lee Designs/Honda

“I got me a pet wombat!” - Blake “Bilko” Williams, X Games Gold Medalist and Reknowned Ostrich Seducer

“I got my parents a new Apple computer for Christmas. Their old one was stuck on struggle street!” - Tommy Hahn, Motoconcepts/Yamaha

“I got a sweet new fishing pole! I gave my parents fresh new kicks and flights to come watch me and Tommy race at Anaheim 1.” - Wil Hahn, Geico Powersports/Honda

“No great gifts, but Carter and I did enjoy perfect conditions up in Phelan for some moto and trail riding. Carter said, ‘This is the best gift ever!’” - Doug Dubach, Dubach Racing Development

Midway through the 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, and FIM World Championship, season, Factory Honda rookie Trey Canard received the opportunity of a lifetime when he was asked to fill in for an injured Andrew Short while on hiatus from the AMA Supercross Lites Western Regional Championship. The Oklahoma native made his debut in the premier AMA Supercross class in Indianapolis and after six races, posted five podium finishes to prove he has the ability to succeed in the elite division.

As a result of his stellar substitute performances, Canard's service at Factory Honda also served as a tryout for the team heading into the 2011 Monster Energy Supercross season when the 2008 AMA Supercross Lites East Region Champion was slated to make his move into the premier class. He further proved his maturity and composure as a rider by staging an incredible come-from-behind performance to claim his first national title in AMA Motocross this past summer.

"The Lites class is an entirely different ball game when it comes to racing," said Canard. "But having such strong performances in the premier class helped give me a little more confidence (outdoors). The motocross championship has been huge (for me), but ultimately I'm the same guy. A lot of positives came out of that title."

When the offseason began, Canard knew almost immediately where he was headed, giving him a slight advantage over his many counterparts who were still solidifying their deals for the 2011 season.

"I was very thankful," he added. "I know a lot of guys stress about where they're going to end up, but American Honda is an amazing team."

With a breakthrough season under his belt, Canard arguably has the most momentum heading into his rookie campaign other than reigning premier class champion Ryan Dungey. Despite coming up short in his bid for the 2010 AMA Supercross Lites Western Regional Championship, the level in which he rode in the premier class turned heads and effectively put Canard in the conversation for title contenders in 2011.

"I really just want to be prepared," said Canard. "I want to come in ready, learn, and do the very best I can do. That's all I can ask (of myself)."

While longtime Factory Honda riders Andrew Short and Davi Millsaps have both moved on, Canard will welcome 2009 Anaheim 1 race winner Josh Grant as his teammate. Grant, who rode Hondas throughout the early portion of his career, has considerable speed and talent and will be a good motivator for Canard under the Honda tent.

"I really like Josh," explained Canard. "I think he's a great guy with a huge amount of talent. I think we should (be able) to elevate each other's riding this whole year."

Perhaps the best thing for Canard heading into 2011 is his continued relationship with Honda. The red riders have supported the fourth-year rider throughout his young career, giving him the opportunity that led to his ride for 2011. Having already established a working relationship with the Factory Honda crew in addition to bringing his mechanic Brent Presnell along with him, Canard looks to have all the tools necessary to make a title run and follow in the footsteps of the current champion and longtime rival Dungey.

"To have a team and a company like Honda behind me has been huge," said Canard. "The fact that I'm used to the bike and don't have to go through a whole learning curve is awesome."

New Motocross Pala National

The 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship came to an exciting conclusion on Saturday, returning to San Diego County for the first time in 28 years with the inaugural Pala Motocross National from Pala Raceway. After a dominant second half of the season, GEICO Powersports Honda's Trey Canard, of Shawnee, Okla., secured his first career motocross championship in the 250 Class with a third-place finish on the day. In the premier 450 Class, Rockstar/Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., etched his name in the record books with his 10th overall win of his rookie season.

The unpredictable nature of the 250 Class was on full display at Pala as rookie Dean Wilson, of Scotland, raced to his second career victory with a 1-1 moto sweep for Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki. However, Wilson's triumph was overshadowed by the stellar come-from-behind championship win by Canard.

Coming into the season finale, Canard trailed Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Christophe Pourcel, of France, by seven points. As the duo battled in the first moto, both riders experienced trouble in separate crashes, but Pourcel's resulted in a separated shoulder and when he failed to return to compete in the second moto, his championship hopes were over.

"There's so many emotions and thoughts running through my head," said Canard, who won five of the final seven races of the season to overcome a 57-point deficit to Pourcel. "When the time came, I thought about all these hard years and it made it that much better. I'm still kind of dreaming right now. I'm just stoked."

Canard joined Wilson on the overall podium in third (4-3), while Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Tyla Rattray, of South Africa, earned the runner-up spot (2-2).

Dungey entered the day looking to break Ricky Carmichael's rookie record of nine overall wins that has stood since the 2000 season. Having wrapped up the 450 Class title two rounds ago to become the first rookie in history to win both the AMA Supercross and AMA Motocross championships, he continued his dominant form on Saturday by sweeping the day's motos.

"I didn't get off to the best of starts in the second moto and I had to work," said Dungey. "Patience definitely plays a role in it and I've learned a lot about that in recent years. It was new track and it was really good. It got rough and I think we all really liked it."

In addition to winning the most races ever by a rookie, Dungey also surpasses Carmichael's rookie point total by eight points ending the season with a record 543 markers.

Honda Red Bull Racing's Andrew Short, of Smithville, Texas, finished second (3-2) with GEICO Powersports Honda's Brett Metcalfe, of Australia, in third (2-3).

In just two weeks on September 25-26, the stars of motocross from around the globe will converge on Lakewood, Colo., for the annual Motocross of Nations from Thunder Valley Motocross Park. Team USA will look for its sixth consecutive win and 21st overall win at the Olympics of Motocross with Dungey, Short and Canard representing Team USA.

The MotorcycleUSA.com Women's Motocross Championship brought it 2010 season to a close as well with the Dunlop Tire Pala Women's National. After a dominating season, DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing Yamaha's Jessica Patterson, of Tallahassee, Fla., captured her record sixth WMX Class title en route to a runner-up effort at Pala (1-2). Honda Red Bull Racing's Ashley Fiolek, of St. Augustine, Fla., took her second win of the season (2-1) with MotoConcepts Yamaha's Vicki Golden, of El Cajon, Calif., in third (3-6).

New Motocross Video Recap: Washougal National

It's been 52 years since a dirt bike roosted across Catalina Island in a competition format. Since then, the sleepy town of Avalon hasn't changed much; the boats in the harbor are a bit newer, there's now cell service, but overall the town itself appears untouched by time.

800 Riders, plus an estimated 3000 spectators converged on Avalon this past weekend for the 2010 Catalina Motocross Grand Prix. Endless big names littered the start sheet of many motos. Kurt Caselli, Kendall Norman, Ronnie Renner, Travis Pastrana to just name a few were among the many stars present to turn the dirt up on this epic event.

Cycle World's Ryan Dudek strapped on a helmet cam and gives us a pretty good idea of what the track looked like and felt like.

New motocross Risk greater than the reward

Motocross Legend Travis Pastrana sits down with GrindTV to discuss the impact of injuries in motocross. In a candid interview, Pastrana open ups about how injuries have molded his career as well as threaten it at the same time. After numerous injuries, Pastrana reflects on whether or not he feels, the reward is greater than the risk.
